Principles of Quantum Mechanics

Apart from small improvements scattered over the text, there are three major changes. First, I have rewritten a big chunk of the mathematical introduction in Chapter 1. Next, I have added a discussion of time-reversal invariance. I don't know how it got left out the first time-I wish I could go back and change it. The most important change concerns the inclusion of Chaper 21, "Path Integrals: Part II." The first edition already revealed my partiality for this subject by having a chapter devoted to it, which was quite unusual in those days. In this one, I have cast off all restraint and gone all out to discuss many kinds of path integrals and their uses. Whereas in Chapter 8 the path integral recipe was simply given, here I start by deriving it. I derive the configuration space integral (the usual Feynman integral), phase space integral, and (oscillator) coherent state integral. I discuss two applica- tions: the derivation and application of the Berry phase and a study of the lowest Landau level with an eye on the quantum Hall effect. The relevance of these topics is unquestionable. This is followed by a section of imaginary time path integrals- its description of tunneling, instantons, and symmetry breaking, and its relation to classical and quantum statistical mechanics. An introduction is given to the transfer matrix. Then I discuss spin coherent state path integrals and path integrals for fermions. These were thought to be topics too advanced for a book like this, but I believe this is no longer true. These concepts are extensively used and it seemed a good idea to provide the students who had the wisdom to buy this book with a head start.

Principles of modern physics

The material discussed here includes probability, relativity, quantum mechanics, atomic physics, statistical mechanics, nuclear physics and elementary particles. Some of these top&, such as statistical mechanics and probability, are ordinarily not included in textbooks at this level. However, we have felt that for proper understanding of many topics in modern physics--such as quaIlturn mechanics and its applications--this material is essential. It is our opilnion that present-day science and engineering students should be able to worlk quantitatively with the concepts of modern physics. Therefore, we have attempted to present these ideas in a manner which is logical and fairly rigorous. A number of topics, especially in quantum1 mechanics, are presented in greater depth than is customary. In many cases, unique ways of presentation are given which greatly simplify the discussion of there topics. However, few of the developments require more mathematics than elementary calculus and the algebra of complex nurnbers; in a few places, familiarity with partial differentiation will be necessary. Unifying concepts which halve important applications throughout modern physics, such as relativity, probability and the laws of conservation, have been stressed. Almost all theoretical developments are linked to examples and data taken from experiment. Summaries are included at the end of each chapter, as well as problems with wide variations in difficulty.

PRINCIPLES OF LASERS AND OPTICS

Principles of Lasers and Optics describes both the fundamental principles of lasers and the propagation and application of laser radiation in bulk and guided wave components. All solid state, gas and semiconductor lasers are analyzed uniformly as macroscopic devices with susceptibility originated from quantum mechanical interactions to develop an overall understating of the coherent nature of laser radiation. The objective of the book is to present lasers and applications of laser radiation from a macroscopic, uniform point of view. Analyses of the unique properties of coherent laser light in optical components are presented together and derived from fundamental principles, to allow students to appreciate the differences and similarities. Topics covered include a discussion of whether laser radiation should be analyzed as natural light or as a guided wave, the macroscopic differences and similarities between various types of lasers, special techniques, such as super-modes and the two-dimensional Green’s function for planar waveguides, and some unusual analyses.

надеялась, что «Мечтать не вредно» поможет людям, как помогал им мой семинар, но не была в этом уверена. Семинары записывались (очень много аудиокассет – ведь каждый длился около двенадцати часов), в книге все излагалось теми же словами, что и на занятиях. Но там люди работали лицом к лицу, и я беспокоилась, что книга не сможет оказать нужного воздействия.
