Третий том «Литература. Язык и письменность» энциклопедии «Духовная культура Китая» тесно связан с двумя предыдущими томами: «Философия» (вышел в 2006 г.), «Мифология. Религия» (вышел в 2007 г.). Все они посвящены единому духовному комплексу китайской культуры и имеют общую терминологическую и текстологическую базу. В настоящем томе два тематических блока - «Литература» и «Язык и письменность», каждый из которых делится на Общий и Словарный разделы. Общий раздел содержит развернутые теоретические статьи и очерки, отражающие основные темы и проблемы затрагиваемой области. В Словарном разделе представлены основные понятия, категории, литературные течения и направления, канонические и художественные произведения, персоналии. Справочный раздел включает избранную библиографию, хронологическую таблицу, карты, лингвистические таблицы и указатели.

Differential Geometry, Analysis and Physics

In this book I present differential geometry and related mathematical topics with the help of examples from physics. It is well known that there is something strikingly mathematical about the physical universe as it is conceived of in the physical sciences. The convergence of physics with mathematics, especially differential geometry, topology and global analysis is even more pronounced in the newer quantum theories such as gauge field theory and string theory. The amount of mathematical sophistication required for a good understanding of modern physics is astounding. On the other hand, the philosophy of this book is that mathematics itself is illuminated by physics and physical thinking. The ideal of a truth that transcends all interpretation is perhaps unattainable. Even the two most impressively objective realities, the physical and the mathematical, are still only approachable through, and are ultimately inseparable from, our normative and linguistic background. And yet it is exactly the tendency of these two sciences to point beyond themselves to something transcendentally real that so inspires us. Whenever we interpret something real, whether physical or mathematical, there will be those aspects which arise as mere artifacts of our current descriptive scheme and those aspects that seem to be objective realities which are revealed equally well through any of a multitude of equivalent descriptive schemes-“cognitive inertial frames” as it were. This theme is played out even within geometry itself where a viewpoint or interpretive scheme translates to the notion of a coordinate system on a differentiable manifold.

Evolutionary Biology: A Plant Perspective

This book was initiated as a result of my experience developing a course in plant evolutionary biology. The first day of class, I challenged the students to list unique characteristics of plants and to think about how these features affected the patterns and modes of plant evolution. This became the theme for the course and eventu ally for this text. As we worked through each topic, I continued to find examples of aspects of the biology and ecology of plants that had implications for evolutionary processes. I was motivated to begin writing reviews of topics that were not covered in the text we were using in class. As the term progressed, I continued writing to fill in gaps, and very soon, I had most of the outline for this book.
