PHYSICS OF SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICES
This Textbook is intended for upper division undergraduate and graduate courses. As a prerequisite, it requires mathematics through differential equations, and modern physics where students are introduced to quantum mechanics. The different Chapters contain different levels of difficulty. The concepts introduced to the Reader are first presented in a simple way, often using comparisons to everyday-life experiences such as simple fluid mechanics. Then the concepts are explained in depth, without leaving mathematical developments to the Reader's responsibility. It is up to the Instructor to decide to which depth he or she wishes to teach the physics of semiconductor devices.

Advanced Memristor Modeling
The investigation of new memory schemes, neural networks, computer systems and many other improved electronic devices is very important for future generations of electronic circuits and for their widespread application in all the areas of industry. Relatedly, the analysis of new efficient and advanced electronic elements and circuits is an essential field of highly developed electrical and electronic engineering. The resistance-switching phenomenon, observed in many amorphous oxides, has been investigated since 1970 and is promising for inclusion in technologies for constructing new electronic memories. It has been established that such oxide materials have the ability to change their conductance in accordance to the applied voltage and memorizing their state for a long time interval. Similar behavior was predicted for the memristor element by Leon Chua in 1971. The memristor was proposed in accordance with symmetry considerations and the relationships between the four basic electric quantities—electric current i, voltage v, charge q and flux linkage Ф. The memristor is a passive one-port element, together with the capacitor, inductor and resistor.

EUREKA!
There is a general perception that physics is a difficult science to understand. This arises for two main reasons. First, it is the most quantitative of all the sciences and, inevitably, the detailed description of its underlying theories is mostly couched in very advanced mathematical language. Second, at the most fundamental level, it deals with processes and phenomena on time and space scales inconceivably smaller or larger than those experienced in our everyday life. In other words it deals with a great deal of alien territory in terms of, for many people, an alien language. Hence the aforementioned ‘difficulty’.

Physics of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials
More serious efforts to use the power hidden in magnetic materials were made only much later. For instance, in the 18th century smaller pieces of magnetic materials were combined into a larger magnet body that was found to have quite a substantial lifting power. Progress in magnetism was made after Oersted discovered in 1820 that a magnetic field could be generated with an electric current. Sturgeon successfully used this knowledge to produce the first electromagnet in 1825. Although many famous scientists tackled the phenomenon of magnetism from the theoretical side (Gauss, Maxwell, and Faraday) it is mainly 20th century physicists who must take the credit for giving a proper description of magnetic materials and for laying the foundations of modem technology. Curie and Weiss succeeded in clarifying the phenomenon of spontaneous magnetization and its temperature dependence. The existence of magnetic domains was postulated by Weiss to explain how a material could be magnetized and nevertheless have a net magnetization of zero. The properties of the walls of such magnetic domains were studied in detail by Bloch, Landau, and Néel.
