Time Series Econometrics

Over the past decades, time series analysis has experienced a proliferous increase of applications in economics, especially in macroeconomics and finance. Today these tools have become indispensable to any empirically working economist. Whereas in the beginning the transfer of knowledge essentially flowed from the natural sciences, especially statistics and engineering, to economics, over the years theoretical and applied techniques specifically designed for the nature of economic time series and models have been developed.

Regression Modeling Strategies

There are many books that are excellent sources of knowledge about individual statistical tools (survival models, general linear models, etc.), but the art of data analysis is about choosing and using multiple tools. In the words of Chatfield [100, p. 420] “...students typically know the technical details of regression for example, but not necessarily when and how to apply it. This argues the need for a better balance in the literature and in statistical teaching between techniques and problem solving strategies.” Whether analyzing risk factors, adjusting for biases in observational studies, or developing predictive models, there are common problems that few regression texts address.

This book is a translation of “Psychologie de la perception” published by the Presses de l’Université Laval and has the same name as a course offered at the School of Psychology of Laval University, Québec. It is not a coincidence; the book was written for students of this course. Over the years, whether at Laurentian University a few decades ago or at Laval University since 1996, I learned a lot from the questions and needs for clarifi cation voiced by the students. The book is partly a response to the requested explanations regarding some of the main phenomena, techniques, and principles encountered in the fi eld of perception.

Real Analysis

Analysis forms an essential basis of mathematics as a whole, as well as of the natural sciences, and more and more of the social sciences too. The theory of analysis (differentiation and integration) was created—after Galileo’s insight—for the purposes of describing the universe in the language of mathematics. Working out the precise theory took almost 300 years, with a large portion of this time devoted to definitions that encapsulate the essence of limits and continuity. Mastering these concepts can be a difficult process; this is one of the reasons why analysis is only barely present in most high-school curricula.

Philosophy of Science for Scientists

The Swedish predecessor of this book, Introduktion till Vetenskapsteorin, grew out of an urgently felt need when I was teaching philosophy of science for students of engineering, physics, biology, social science, medicine and nursing. These students have normally no philosophical background and quite often little knowledge of history of science. This book has now been in print for 15 years, and three editions and its relative success in Sweden have encouraged me to make a translation to English in the hope that a wider audience also will find it useful.
