Skills in Creativity, Design and Innovation

We are in a period in our economic history when, as never before, we need to focus on how we can marshal our national educational advantages, our skills and our innate attributes of character and personality to best effect to keep Ireland on a path of job creation, matched with improved competitiveness. In that context, the publication of this report could hardly be more timely. The concepts of creativity, design and innovation as essential ingredients for economic success are well established and accepted. However, they can sometimes seem to be a bit nebulous in terms of what they actually mean in the reality of the workplace. Some may associate creativity, design and innovation with scientific laboratory work, whereas others will think more in terms of the creative arts. In short, different individuals and bodies often have differing interpretations of what these concepts actually entail.

Данный учебник представляет собой весьма полный современный вводный курс обыкновенных дифференциальных уравнений. Довольно подробно освещены все темы, затрагиваемые в классических вводных курсах, включая применение матричных методов, операционного исчисления, степенных рядов и рядов Фурье. Не обойдены вниманием и современные исследования в области дифференциальных уравнений, такие как, например, хаос в динамических системах и нелинейные явления и системы. Особое внимание авторы уделяют численным методам и обучению построения математических моделей самых разнообразных (например, экологических, физических, инженерных) систем. Для изучения таких моделей авторы используют самые современные математические пакеты: MATLAB, Maple и Mathematica. Кроме того, для каждого раздела имеются задачи различной сложности, а также проекты для самостоятельной разработки студентами. Несомненно, книга будет полезна всем, кто изучает дифференциальные уравнения — как математикам, так и студентам других специальностей — инженерам, физикам, химикам, биологам, географам и геологам.

Linear Algebra

In most mathematics programs linear algebra comes in the first or second year, following or along with at least one course in calculus. While the location of this course is stable, lately the content has been under discussion. Some instructors have experimented with varying the traditional topics and others have tried courses focused on applications or on computers. Despite this healthy debate, most instructors are still convinced, I think, that the right core material is vector spaces, linear maps, determinants, and eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Applications and code have a part to play, but the themes of the course should remain unchanged. Not that all is fine with the traditional course. Many of us believe that the standard text type could do with a change. Introductory texts have traditionally started with extensive computations of linear reduction, matrix multiplication, and determinants, which take up half of the course. Then, when vector spaces and linear maps finally appear and definitions and proofs start, the nature of the course takes a sudden turn. The computation drill was there in the past because, as future practitioners, students needed to be fast and accurate. But that has changed. Being a whiz at 5 ×5 determinants just isn’t important anymore. Instead, the availability of computers gives us an opportunity to move toward a focus on concepts.

Elements of Abstract and Linear Algebra

To omit as many topics as possible. This is a foundational course, not a topics course. If a topic is not used later, it should not be included. There are three good reasons for this. First, linear algebra has top priority. It is better to go forward and do more linear algebra than to stop and do more group and ring theory. Second, it is more important that students learn to organize and write proofs themselves than to cover more subject matter. Algebra is a perfect place to get started because there are many “easy” theorems to prove. There are many routine theorems stated here without proofs, and they may be considered as exercises for the students. Third, the material should be so fundamental that it be appropriate for students in the physical sciences and in computer science. Zillions of students take calculus and cookbook linear algebra, but few take abstract algebra courses. Something is wrong here, and one thing wrong is that the courses try to do too much group and ring theory and not enough matrix theory and linear algebra.
