Operations Research An Introduction
Over the past few editions, I agonized over the benefit of continuing to include the hand computational algorithms that, to my thinking, have been made obsolete by present-day great advances in computing. I no longer have this “anxiety” because I sought and received feedback from colleagues regarding this matter. The consensus is that these classical algorithms must be preserved because they are an important part of OR history. Some responses even included possible scenarios (now included in this edition) in which these classical algorithms can be beneficial in practice. In the spirit of my colleagues collective wisdom, which I now enthusiastically espouse, I added throughout the book some 25 entries titled Aha! moments. These entries, written mostly in an informal style, deal with OR anecdotes/stories (some dating back to centuries ago) and OR concepts (theory, applications, computations, and teaching methodology). The goal is to provide a historical perspective of the roots of OR (and, hopefully, render a “less dry” book read).

SYMBOLS AND MEANINGS IN SCHOOL MATHEMATICS
Symbols and Meanings in School Mathematics explores the various uses and aspects of symbols in school mathematics and also examines the notion of mathematical meaning. It is concerned with the power of language which enables us to do mathematics, giving us the ability to name and rename, to transform names and to use names and descriptions to conjure, communicate and control our images. It is in the interplay between language, image and object that mathematics is created and can be communicated to others. One theme which runs throughout the book is the core metaphor of manipulation. Practical apparatus in North America is known as ‘manipulatives’, some recent computer software is known as a ‘symbolic manipulator’ and we are taught to manipulate numbers, algebraic expressions, and geometric figures and images. What does the omnipresence of this term describing the doing of mathematics tell us about the two fundamental metaphors in English for understanding: touch and sight?

Mathematics, Education and Philosophy
Mathematics education is established worldwide as a major area of study, with numerous dedicated journals and conferences serving national and international communities of scholars. Research in mathematics education is becoming more theoretically orientated. Vigorous new perspectives are pervading it from disciplines and fields as diverse as psychology, philosophy, logic, sociology, anthropology, history, feminism, cognitive science, semiotics, hermeneutics, post-structuralism and post-modernism. The series Studies in Mathematics Education consists of research contributions to the field based on disciplined perspectives that link theory with practice. It is founded on the philosophy that theory is the practitioner’s most powerful tool in understanding and changing practice. Whether the practice is mathematics teaching, teacher education, or educational research, the series intends to offer new perspectives to assist in clarifying and posing problems and to stimulate debate. The series Studies in Mathematics Education will encourage the development and dissemination of theoretical perspectives in mathematics education as well as their critical scrutiny. It aims to have a major impact on the development of mathematics education as a field of study into the twenty-first century.

Solving Mathematical Problems: A Personal Perspective
This is Terry Tao’s first book. The manuscript was prepared early in 1991, when Terry was 15 years of age. We, at Deakin University, commisioned Terry to write a book on mathematical problem solving which would be suitable for use in a Deakin University course taken mainly by practising school teachers. The brief given to Terry was to write a book that would be at least partly comprehensible to those who did not have high formal mathematical qualifications, yet would enable all readers, whatever their mathematical backgrounds, to appreciate the beauty of elegant problem-solving stragies. The outcome of Terry’s effort is a work which, we are confident, will inspire teachers and students of mathematics at all levels to reflect on the obvious youthful zest, joy, yet dogged determiniation to achieve an excellent result, that characterise Terry’s responses to challenging mathematical problems.

Mathematical problems, or puzzles, are important to real mathematics (like solving real-life problems), just as fables, stories, and anecdotes are important to the young in understanding real life. Mathematical problems are ‘sanitized’ mathematics, where an elegant solution has already been found (by someone else, of course), the question is stripped of all superfluousness and posed in an interesting and (hopefully) thought-provoking way. If mathematics is likened to prospecting for gold, solving a good mathematical problem is akin to a ‘hide-and-seek’ course in gold-prospecting: you are given a nugget to find, and you know what it looks like, that it is out there somewhere, that it is not too hard to reach, that it is unearthing within your capabilities, and you have conveniently been given the right equipment (i.e. data) to get it. It may be hidden in a cunning place, but it will require ingenuity rather than digging to reach it.

Solutions Manual for
The solutions manual is intented for all students taking a graduate level Complex Analysis course. Students can check their answers to homework problems assigned from the excellent book “Functions of One Complex Variable I”, Second Edition by John B. Conway. Furthermore students can prepare for quizzes, tests, exams and final exams by solving additional exercises and check their results. Maybe students even study for preliminary exams for their doctoral studies. However, I have to warn you not to copy straight of this book and turn in your homework, because this would violate the purpose of homeworks. Of course, that is up to you.
