Der 1975 verstorbene Literaturkritiker und Essayist Lionel Trilling gilt in den Vereinigten Staaten als einer der letzten großen Vertreter der Tradition des intellektuellen Liberalismus und zugleich als einer ihrer nachdenklichsten Kritiker. In seinen letzten Lebensjahren hat er sich intensiv mit den soziologischen und anthropologischen Voraussetzungen des Menschenbildes dieser Tradition beschäftigt. Die 1972 unter dem Titel »Sincerity and Authenticity« veröffentlichten Vorlesungen, die hier auf deutsch vorgelegt werden, sind in der englischsprachigen Welt viel diskutiert worden und wirken bis in die augenblicklichen Erörterungen über den narzißtischen Charakter des gegenwärtigen vorherrschenden Persönlichkeitstypus nach. Trillings Buch könnte heute in Deutschland als ein Beitrag zum Verständnis dessen gelesen werden, was es mit dem Gerede von der »Neuen Subjektivität« auf sich haben mag. Die Frage, was die Literatur mit »Aufrichtigkeit« zu tun hat, wird von ihm an Rousseau, Jane Austen und Joseph Conrads »Herz der Finsternis« (der literarischen Vorlage für Coppolas Vietnamfilm »Apocalypse Now«) erörtert, und er zeigt, daß die alte Aufrichtigkeit heute nicht nur in der Literatur, sondern in den neuen Modepsychologien, die die Psychoanalyse abgelöst hab
