The people of this book with few exceptions are of a colonial and Indonesian urban elite of the twentieth century, which means a group to a lesser, larger, or overwhelming extent touched by and induced into the Western culture of imperial modernity (predominantly secular, among other things, which explains why so few devout Muslims appear in the book).

Any such project is always the outcome of numerous moments of friendship, conversation, support, love, intellectual guidance, and encouragement that its author receives over the years. While they may not always be directly evident, they nurture the author to arrive at a stage where she is able to bring years of thinking into some kind of fruition. Thus, numerous people need to be thanked for all that they have given me over the years. Writing the first- ever history of a movement is a daunting enterprise. As I got started my feelings on the matter fluctuated widely: Was the topic too insignificant to be worth chronicling? Why had no one tried it before? Or was the task too difficult to undertake? Had many others perhaps tried and given up in defeat? Was I ahead of the curve— or behind it? As I did my research I alternated between elation over the freedom I had in charting uncharted waters and the frustration that no one else had taken the plunge ahead of me.
