Фотография изобретена свыше ста лет тому назад, в 1839 году. Она развивалась на основе успехов физики и химии. Оптика совершенство­вала объективы; химия неустанно улучшала светочувствительные мате­риалы - пластинку, пленку, бумагу; точная механика разрабатывала конструкции фотоаппаратов. В результате труда множества ученых фотография к нашему вре­мени достигла огромных технических успехов и широко применяется в различных областях человеческой деятельности: в науке, технике, общественной жизни, быту. Если первым фотографам для съемки требовалась получасовая вы­держка на солнце, то теперь практически осуществима съемка в одну двухмиллионную долю секунды. Стала возможной фотосъемка любых быстро протекающих процессов. Современных фотографов не лимитирует расстояние до фотогра­фируемого предмета: сделаны снимки земной поверхности со страто­стата, поднявшегося на высоту 22 километров; не очень трудным делом является получение отчетливых снимков поверхности луны. Посредством электронного микроскопа осуществляются фотографи­ческие снимки с увеличением до 130 ООО раз. Фотографируются вирусы и крупные молекулы, бывшие не так давно лишь объектами теорети­ческого суждения.
