INTRODUCTION TO LOGIC CIRCUITS & LOGIC DESIGN WITH VERILOG

The purpose of this new book is to fill a void that has appeared in the instruction of digital circuits over the past decade due to the rapid abstraction of system design. Up until the mid-1980s, digital circuits were designed using classical techniques. Classical techniques relied heavily on manual design practices for the synthesis, minimization, and interfacing of digital systems. Corresponding to this design style, academic textbooks were developed that taught classical digital design techniques. Around 1990, large-scale digital systems began being designed using hardware description languages (HDLs) and automated synthesis tools. Broad-scale adoption of this modern design approach spread through the industry during this decade.

International Perspectives on Psychotherapy

Witmer, who later became one of the cofounders of the American Psychological Association, thought that the goal of clinical psychology should be similar to that of medicine to improve the human condition (Witmer, 1897). This notion significantly expanded the boundaries of the young discipline, which was primarily defined by experimental psychology to simply study the nature of psychological phenomena (McReynolds, 1997).

Grammar for Teachers

The first edition of Grammar for Teachers: A Guide to American English for Native and Non-Native Speakers was the result of my frustrations over many years of teaching structure courses and not being able to find an appropriate grammar text for the pre-service and in-service teachers enrolled in these classes. The students in these courses represented a variety of teaching backgrounds: pre-service teachers, ESL and EFL teachers at all levels and teaching in all types of programs, native and non-native speakers of English, content-area teachers with ESL students in their classes needing additional certification or endorsement, and many others.

Bayesian Essentials with R

The purpose of this book is to provide a self-contained entry into practical and computational Bayesian statistics using generic examples from the most common models for a class duration of about seven blocks that roughly correspond to 13–15 weeks of teaching (with three hours of lectures per week), depending on the intended level and the prerequisites imposed on the students. (That estimate does not include practice—i.e., R programming labs, writing data reports—since those may have a variable duration, also depending on the students’ involvement and their programming abilities.) The emphasis on practice is a strong commitment of this book in that its primary audience consists of graduate students who need to use (Bayesian) statistics as a tool to analyze their experiments and/or datasets.

Biomechanics is a discipline utilized by different groups of professionals. It is a required basic science for orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, osteopaths, physiatrists, rheuma- tologists, physical and occupational therapists, chiropractors, athletic trainers and beyond. These medical and paramedical specialists usually do not have a strong mathematics and physics background. Biomechanics must be presented to these professionals in a rather nonmathematical way so that they may learn the concepts of mechanics without a rigorous mathematical approach

Advanced Quantum Mechanics

The second edition features 62 additional end of chapter problems and many sections were edited for clarity and improvement of presentation. Furthermore, the chapter on Klein-Gordon and Dirac fields has been expanded and split into Chapter 21 on relativistic quantum fields and Chapter 22 on applications of quantum electrodynamics. This was motivated by the renewed interest in the notions and techniques of relativistic quantum theory due to their increasing relevance for materials research. Of course, relativistic quantum theory has always been an important tool in subatomic physics and in quantum optics since the dynamics of photons or high energy particles is expressed in terms of relativistic quantum fields. Furthermore, relativistic quantum mechanics has also always been important for chemistry and condensed matter physics through the impact of relativistic corrections to the Schrödinger equation, primarily through the Pauli term and through spin-orbit couplings.

Fundamental Astronomy

As the title suggests, this book is about fundamental things that one might expect to remain fairly the same. Yet astronomy has evolved enormously over the last few years, and only a few chapters of this book have been left unmodified. Since the book is used also by many amateurs, the introductory chapter has been extended to give a brief summary of different celestial objects to “soften” the jump to rather technical topics.

It has been written with two goals in mind.
