Alışılagelmiş yaklaşımla, taşıyıcı sistemin dayanımını arttırarak deprem etkisi karşılanabileceği gibi, sistemin rijitliğini azaltarak deprem etkisini azaltmak da mümkündür. Her iki durumda da deprem etkisindeki yapıların davranışının anlaşılması gereği önemlidir. Deprem etkisinin diğer bir farklılığı da, dinamik özelliğe sahip olmasıdır.
