Quantum Statistical Theory of Superconductivity
Since its discovery in 1911, superconductivity has been one of the most interesting topics in physics. Superconductivity baffled some of the best minds of the 20th century and was finally understood in a microscopic way in 1957 with the landmark Nobel Prize-winning contribution from John Bardeen, Leon Cooper, and Robert Schrieffer. Since the early 1960s there have been many applications of superconductivity including large magnets for medical imaging and high-energy physics, radio-frequency cavities and components for a variety of applications, and quantum interference devices for sensitive magnetometers and digital circuits. These last devices are based on the Nobel Prize-winning (Brian) Josephson effect. In 1987, a dream of many scientists was realized with the discovery of superconducting compounds containing copper–oxygen layers that are superconducting above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. The revolutionary discovery of superconductivity in this class of compounds (the cuprates) won Georg Bednorz and Alex Mueller the Nobel Prize. This series on Selected Topics in Superconductivity will draw on the rich history of both the science and technology of this field. In the next few years we will try to chronicle the development of both the more traditional metallic superconductors as well as the scientific and technological emergence of the cuprate superconductors. The series will contain broad overviews of fundamental topics as well as some very highly focused treatises designed for a specialized audience.

Quantum Processes in Semiconductors
This new edition contains three new chapters concerned with material that is meant to provide a deeper foundation for the quantum processes described previously, and to provide a statistical bridge to phenomena involving charge transport. The recent theoretical and experimental interest in fundamental quantum behaviour involving mixed and entangled states and the possible exploitation in quantum computation meant that some account of this should be included. A comprehensive treatment of this important topic involving many-particle theory would be beyond the scope of the book, and I have settled on an account that is based on the single-particle density matrix. A remarkably successful bridge between single-particle behaviour and the behaviour of populations is the Boltzmann equation, and the inclusion of an account of this and some of its solutions for hot-electrons was long overdue. If the Boltzmann equation embodied the important step from quantum statistical to semi-classical statistical behaviour, the drift-diffusion model completes the trend to fully phenomenological description of transport. Since many excellent texts already cover this area I have chosen to describe only some of the more exciting transport phenomena in semiconductor physics such as those involving a differential negative resistance, or involving acoustoelectric effects, or even both, and something of their history.

Quantum physics
This book is intended to serve as an introduction to quantum physics. In writing it, I have kept several guidelines in mind. 1. First, it is helpful for the development of intuition in any new field of study to start with a base of detailed knowledge about simple systems. I have therefore worked out a number of problems in great detail, so that the insight thus obtained can be used for more complex systems. 2. Every aspect of quantum mechanics has been helpful in understanding some physical phenomenon. I have therefore laid great stress on applications at every stage of the development of the subject. Although no atea of quantum physics is totally developed, my intention is to bridge the gap between a modern physics course and the more formal development of quantum mechanics. Thus, many applications are discussed, and I have stressed order-of-magnitude estimates and the importance of numbers. 3. In keeping with the level of the book, the mathematical structure has been kept as simple as possible. New concepts, such as operators, and new mathematical tools necessarily make their appearance. I have dealt with the former more by analogy than by precise definition, and I have minimized the use of new tools insofar as possible.

Quantum Physics A First Encounter INTERFERENCE, ENTANGLEMENT, AND REALITY
In1900, Max Planck felt forced to accept the concept of the quantum in the exchange of energy between light and matter. Five years later, in 1905 – the miraculous year of which we celebrate the centenary – Albert Einstein enthusiastically decided to generalise the concept and to admit that light itself is composed of elementary quanta, later named photons, having both a specific energy and a specific momentum. He was of course aware of the difficulty of reconciling the image of a light beam being a flow of particles with the successful description developed during the nineteenth century of a wave, more precisely an electromagnetic wave. Only a wave can give rise to the phenomenon of interference and diffraction, as clearly shown by Thomas Young and Augustin Fresnel in the early 1800s. In 1909, Einstein delivered in Salzburg an amazing lecture1 where he argued that we have to admit that light is both a wave and a particle, which may seem easy to say, but which is a challenge to our understanding. Since that time, quantum mechanics has not ceased to puzzle us. On the one hand, it is probably the most successful physical theory ever, allowing us to understand the microscopic world, notably the stability and properties of matter, and the manner in which light is emitted or absorbed by matter (for a long time light was the only way for us to get information about the intimate – microscopic, nature of matter).

A velencei maszk merít a görög színházi maszkokból, urak divatos viseletéből.

Quantum Physics
The combination of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory constitutes the most revolutionary and influential physical theory of the twentieth century. Its impact is felt not only in almost all other sciences, but the fruits of its application are ubiquitous in everyday life. This textbook is designed to teach graduate students the underlying quantum-physical ideas, their mathematical formulations, and the basic problem-solving techniques of the discipline. It assumes they have taken at least one introductory course in quantum mechanics as undergraduates and are familiar with the history of the subject and the basic experimental evidence that led to its adoption, as well as with many of its fundamental notions. In contrast to most other authors, I am therefore not introducing the quantum theory via an historical survey of its early successes. Instead, following the models of books on classsical mechanics or electromagnetism, I develop the theory from its basic assumptions, beginning with statics, followed by the dynamics and details of its specific areas of use as well as the needed mathematical techniques.
