This report documents a recent workshop 1 at which approximately 85 biomedical scientists, mathematicians, and statisticians shared their experiences in modeling aspects of cellular function, diseasestates, and neuroscience. Transparent Minds in Science Fiction An Introduction to Accounts of Alien, AI and Post-Human Consciousness
This book is based on two abiding sources of excitement and awe: the science of the brain and the stories of science fiction. Ever since reading J Z Young’s Programs of the Brain at school I have been intrigued by the brain and our slowly unfolding knowledge of how it works. Based as it was on the learning opportunities afforded by brain misfunction—due to injury or illusion—the research that Programs of the Brain described struck me as practical and evidence-based science, one benefiting in its explanatory power through the (then) new metaphor of the computer.

DATA MINING FOR THE SOCIAL SCIENCES
Data mining, especially as applied to social science data, is a rapidly changing fi eld, and our understanding of these new methods has benefi ted enormously from the teaching and advice of others, most especially Professors Robert Stine, Robert Haralick, and Andrew Rosenberg. Several students who are using these techniques in their doctoral research projects have contributed their wisdom. First and foremost, Darren Kwong prepared several of the worked examples reported in this book, sometimes struggling with obdurate software in the process.

Review of NASA’s Biomedical Research Program
The Strategy report gave the highest overall priority to specific research questions dealing with boneand muscle loss, changes in the function of the vestibular and sensorimotor systems, orthostatic intolerance, radiation hazards, and the physiological and psychological effects of stress. Although the committee found the balance of NASA research between the various biomedical disciplines to begenerally consistent with the relative emphasis given to them in the Strategy report, many of the specific research topics given the highest overall priority are still to be addressed

Architecture Style Structure Design
A building, as an object that defines and encloses space, reflects the society of its time more than any other art-form. The meaning of any building is transmitted as much by the materials in which it is built as by the function it is designed to perform. The vast majority of buildings consist of external walls surrounding an interior space and covered by a roof to provide shelter. Their basic shape directly relates to the materials chosen to form that enclosure. It is the relationship between the architect's attitude to the process of design and the materials in which that design is executed with which this book is concerned.
