USA and International Mathematical Olympiads 2003

This book is intended to help students preparing to participate in the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) in the hope of representing the United States at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The USAMO is the third stage of the selection process leading to participation in the IMO. The preceding examinations are the AMC 10 or the AMC 12 (which replaced the American High School Mathematics Examination) and the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). Participation in the AIME and the USAMO is by invitation only, based on performance in the preceding exams of the sequence.

U.S.A. MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIADS, 1972-1986

The New Mathematical Library (NML) was started in 1961 by the School Mathematics Study Group to make available to high school students short expository books on various topics not usually covered in the high school syllabus. In a decade the NML. matured into a steadily growing series of some twenty titles of interest not only to the originally intended audience, but to college students and teachers at all levels. Previously published by Random House and L. W. Singer, the NMI became a publication series of the Mathematical Asso- ciation of America (MAA) in 1975. Under the auspices of the MAA the NML continues to grow and remains dedicated to its original and expanded purposes. In its third decade, it contains some thirty titles.

TIPS REGARDING UPSC CSE PREPARATION

It is necessary to cover the syllabus thoroughly from such reference books and revise them regularly. A UPSC aspirant’s preparation should always be revision friendly. If you are reading a reference book, either underline important points in the book only or make short notes. So that the next time you are able to cover the same topics in much lesser time. Aspirants should also solve lots of practice papers. The best source is previous years’ UPSC papers. Apart from CSE prelims, objective papers of CAPF, CDS exams conducted by UPSC can also give good idea about the kind of questions asked by UPSC. The aim should be to develop the ability to attempt optimum number of questions keeping in mind the negative marking system. In prelims, I used to attempt the easier questions first and then go for questions where I had to guess or spend some more time. In many questions, even if you don’t know the exact answer, you can guess it by eliminating some options. To develop this judgment, the aspirant should practice regularly.
