Foundations of Fluid Mechanics

The imagination is stricken by the substantial conceptual identity between the problems met in the theoretical study of physical phenomena. It is abso- lutely unexpected and surprising, whether one studies equilibrium statistical mechanics, or quantum field theory, or solid state physics, or celestial mechanics, harmonic analysis, elasticity, general relativity or fluid mechanics and chaos in turbulence. So that when in 1988 I was made chair of Fluid Mechanics at the Università La Sapienza, not to recognize work I did on the subject (there was none) but, rather, to avoid my teaching mechanics, from which I could have a strong cultural influence on mathematical physics in Roma, I was not excessively worried, although I was clearly in the wrong place. The subject is wide, hence in the last decade I could do nothing else but go through books and libraries looking for something that was within the range of the methods and experiences of my past work.

Fluid Mechanics and Machinery

This book Basic Fluid Mechanics is revised and enlarged by the addition of four chapters on Hydraulic Machinery and is now titled as Fluid Mechanics and Machinery. The authors hope this book will have a wider scope. This book will be suitable for the courses on Fluid Mechanics and Machinery of the various branches of study of Anna University and also other Indian universities and the Institution of Engineers (India). Professor Obert has observed in his famous treatise on Thermodynamics that concepts are better understood by their repeated applications to real life situations. A firm conviction of this principle has prompted the author to arrange the text material in each chapter in the following order. In the first section after enunciating the basic concepts and laws, physical and mathematical models are developed leading to the formulation of relevant equations for the determination of outputs. Simple and direct numerical examples are included to illustrate the basic laws. More stress is on the model development as compared to numerical problems.

Fluid Mechanics

The fourth edition of this textbook sees some additions and deletions but no philosophical change. The basic outline of eleven chapters and five appendices remains the same. The triad of integral, differential, and experimental approaches is retained and is approached in that order of presentation. The book is intended for an undergraduate course in fluid mechanics, and there is plenty of material for a full year of instruction. The author covers the first six chapters and part of Chapter 7 in the introductory semester. The more specialized and applied topics from Chapters 7 to 11 are then covered at our university in a second semester. The informal, student-oriented style is retained and, if it succeeds, has the flavor of an interactive lecture by the author.

Fluid Mechanics Second Edition

My involvemcnt with Pijush Kundu’s FluidMechunics first began in April 1991 with a letter from him asking mc to consider his book for adoption in the first year graduatc courSe 1 had been teaching for 25 ycars. That started a correspondence and, in fact, I did adopt the book lor the following acadcmic ycar. The correspondence related to improving the book by enhancing or clarifying various points. T would not have taken the time to do that iT I hadn’t thought this was thc best book at the first-year graduate level. .By the end of that ycar we werc alrcady discussing a swond edition and whether 1 would have a role in it. By early 1992, howcvcr, it was clcar that T had a crushing administrative burden at the University or Pennsylvania and could not undertake any time-consuming projects for the next several years. My wile and 1 met Pijush and Shikha for the first time in December 1992. They were a charming, erudite, sophisticated couple with two brilliant children. We immediately relt a bond orwarmth and €riendship with them. Shikha was a Leacher like my wife so the four of us had a great deal in common. A couple or years later we were shocked to hear that Pijush had died suddenly and unexpectedly. It saddened me gcatly bccause I M been looking forward to working with Yijush on the second edition after my term as department chainnan ended in mid-1997. For the next year and a half, howcvcr, scrious family health problems detoured any plans. Discussions on this cdition resumed in July ol 1999 and wcrc concludcd in the Spring or 2000 when my work really started. This hook remains thc principal work product of Pijush K. Kundu, especially the lengthy chapters on Gravity Waves, Instability, and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, his areas or expertise.

The aim of this series is to provide an inexpensive source of fully solved problems in a wide range of mathematical topics. Initial volumes cater mainly for the needs of first-year and some second-year undergraduates (and other comparable students) in mathematics, engineering and the physical sciences, but later ones deal also with more advanced material. To allow the optimum amount of space to be devoted to problem solving, explanatory text and theory is generally kept to a minimum, and the scope of each book is carefully limited to permit adequate coverage. The books are devised to be used in conjunction with standard lecture courses in place of, or alongside, conventional texts. They will be especially useful to the student as an aid to solving exercises set in lecture courses. Normally, further problems with answers are included as exercises for the reader. This book provides the beginning student in theoretical Fluid Mechanics with all the salient results together with solutions to problems which he is likely to meet in his examinations. Whilst the essentials of basic theory are either explained, discussed or fully developed according to importance, the accent of the work is an explanation by illustration through the medium of worked examples. The coverage is essentially first- or second-year level and the book will be valuable to all students reading for a degree or diploma in pure or applied science where fluid mechanics is part of the course.
