Vor genau 30 Jahren, im Sommer 1983, übergab Siegfried Matthes sein MineralogieLehrbuch erstmals der Öffentlichkeit. Dank einer gelungenen Konzeption erwarb sich das Werk rasch viele Freunde, so dass bis zum Jahr 2001 bereits sechs Auflagen erscheinen konnten. Die letzte von ihnen stammt noch fast ganz aus der Feder von Siegfried Matthes, der jedoch ihr Erscheinen nicht mehr erleben durfte, da er am 2. Mai 1999 im 86. Lebensjahr verstarb. Für mich war es Freude und Verpflichtung zugleich, dieses erfolgreiche Lehrbuch weiter zu betreuen und an den aktuellen Wissensstand anzupassen. Mit den 2005 und 2009 erschienenen Neuauflagen erhielt das Werk ein neues, ansprechenderes Erscheinungsbild; es wurde z. T. neu gegliedert, inhaltlich erweitert und reichhaltiger illustriert. Neu hinzu kamen u. a. eine Einführung in die Geochemie, eine umfassendere Darstellung der Kristallographie auf elementarer Grundlage, sowie Kapitel über unser Planetensystem und seine Entstehung.
